Cairoli Races Into Second Place In The MX1 Championship

After a fantastic result in Round 4 of the MX1 Championship in Brazil where Tony came second he has once again has given a very strong performance in Round 5 in St. Jean d’Angely, France to finish second again pushing the Champion even higher up the MX1 Standings.

The French MX track is notorious for its steep climbs and hills and is obviously most familiar to fan favourite Steven Frossard who went on to win the first moto and come second in the second heat on his Monster Energy Yamaha, sending the crowd wild. Sporting the number 222 and riding the Redbull Teka KTM 350cc bike, Cairoli managed to finish a very respectable second in the first heat and third in the second heat, giving him an overall position of second. Tony finished with much better points than both Clement Desalle and Max Nagl who came in third and seventh respectively overall, hurtling him into second in the MX1 Standings with 193 points, only six points behind the leader Desalle.

So with Round 5 of the MX1 Championship in Agueda, Portugal only a week away the future looks very good for Tony Cairoli. If he can keep putting out strong performances each week he will hopefully move into first on the MX1 Standings but only time will tell whether the Champion can retain his title and we sure hope at Brux Sport that he does!

Cairoli Wins The Second Round in Holland

It has been an interesting start to the MX1 season for Tony Cairoli. After a difficult first round at the Sevlievo circuit in Bulgaria the World Champion managed to finish in ninth position after sustaining a knee injury which prevented him from racing too hard. This is what Cairoli had to say:

“The start is very important here in Bulgaria because it is difficult to pass on this track. It was not so bad for me yesterday but today I had a very bad start in the first moto. I tried to pass as many as possible and I was up to about fifth then I hit my knee trying to pass Goncalves. It’s the same knee that I broke so I was quite worried. It was hurting a lot and I gave up a bit and finished seventh. Then I made an appointment to see the doctor and it started to feel better so I was able to race again in the second moto. My start was better and I almost got the holeshot, I think I was third in the first corner. Then Philippaerts crashed in front of me and I couldn’t avoid him and found I was back at 20 or 21 in the field. I scrambled back to tenth and tried to move up to ninth in the last lap. But I didn’t manage it.”

Despite the Bulgarian circuit being very difficult to pass on and having an injured knee Cairoli still managed to gain some points. The motocross season is long and there will be many chances for the 2010 Champion to work his way back to the top.

The second round of the MX1 season was held in Holland on the traditional sandy circuit of Valkenswaard. Understandably there were some concerns leading up to the race after the first round in Bulgaria but Cairoli put out a fantastic performance, culminating in an important win and walking away with maximum points.

During the first race the Champion had quite a slow start but in typical fashion he made a charge through the pack and finished in first place. What followed in the second heat was a battle for overall first place with his KTM teammate Max Nagl. With Nagl leading out front Cairoli managed to work his way up to second place to seal his overall victory beating Nagl 1-2 to 3-1 in the two heats.

In the press conference Tony admitted that he was still having some problems with his knee in certain situations and walked with a slight limp. Fortunately there is about three weeks before the next stage in Glen Helen for the much needed physiotherapy and rest that he will need to get back to full fitness. So with a long season ahead the future looks very good for Cairoli and if he can get his knee healed it could be a third year as MX1 Chamion.

After two of fifteen stages the MX1 Point Standings are:

1. Steve Frossard 85
2. Max Nagl 80
3. Clement Desalle 78
4. Tony Cairoli 72
5. D Philippaerts 63
6. Rui Goncalves 62
7. Jon Barragan 53
8. E Bobryshev 52
9. D Guarneri 45
10. Steve Ramon 42

Despite suffering from the flu Cairoli has managed to compete on his home turf in the Italian National Championship recently. Comprising of four rounds of two races each, the Italian National acts as a proving ground before the MX GP Championship kicks off.

The first round of the Italian Championship at Ponte a Egola was a good one for Cairoli. During the second race the rider got caught up with several other riders and found himself at about twentieth position, but after some typical Cairoli riding he managed to finish a very respectable third.

During the third round of the Italian Championship at the Cingoli circuit in the Marche region Cairoli performed very consistently finishing third in the first race and first in the second, collecting some valuable points. Overall this gives the Sicilian rider 545 points putting him first position, ten points above rival Philippaerts and fifteen points ahead of Frossard.

Compendium Praises the Role of Mouthpieces in the Future of Athletics

The Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry, a leading dental journal discusses the “Future of Athletic Performance” in a journal issue. The journal, which can be read here,

The most interesting part of the issue discusses the “Effects of Mouthpiece Use on Airway Openings and Lactate Levels in Healthy College Males.” Compendium concludes that the use of a mouthguard goes beyond mere oral-facial injury. A guard actually has been proven to increase muscular strength and endurance. Compendium describes the case of football players and their performance gains from a mouthpiece.

Smith noted that professional football players exhibited greater arm strength with properly fitted mouthpieces that resulted in changes in bite patterns. Smith also noted that those players with the most extreme overbite corrected with a mouthpiece experienced the greatest increase in strength. Specifically, he observed that with a properly adjusted mouthguard, 66% of the players exhibited significant strength improvements on the isometric deltoid press. He stated that the increase in strength with a properly fitted mouthpiece was because of decreased pressure in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

By relieving pressure on the TMJ with a Brux Sport mouthpiece, performance gains can be seen in just about any sport. They even found evidence of gains in non-contact sports like cycling.

In a study of 10 men and 7 women, they found that wearing a mouthpiece during 20 minutes of high intensity cycling resulted in improvements in ventilation (average of 43.13 l/min with mouthpiece vs 50.98 l/min without mouthpiece). They noted that this improvement may be from pursed lips breathing which results in greater oxygen saturation.

The fact is, at least 2/3 of athletes can reap significant performance gains from wearing a mouthpiece. Try out a Brux Sport mouthguard and start realising the gains.

Cairoli is ready for America!

Tony CairoliTony Cairoli is ready for America. At the end of December, the four-time Italian champion will fly to California for a month of training on Motocross and Supercross tracks. He would also like to race a couple of Supercross races and battle Americans on their natural turf. However, before racing comes training: Cairoli will train with the US KTM Team to gain confidence with the new tracks and particularly with the challenging whoops, “which are the type of obstacle I’m not used to face and for which I need to learn the right technique”, says Tony.

Learning Supercross is, well, on track. After Genova, Cairoli has raced in Bercy with good results. He ranked seventh on the first night, thirteenth of a punctured tire on the second, and fourth on Sunday. On the last race, he reached the finish line just a few seconds behind Barcia, the new and much younger king of Bercy. Tony gets better and better every time he rides, and his US outlook is therefore very positive. The most winning Brux Rider always wears Brux during training and races, and he is ready for his new adventure.
